  Abstract:Micro/Nano-scale photonic devices have attracted significant interest recently. The so-called silicon photonics can reduce the cost of many telecommunication components.When low-loss metals are introduced, the resulted plasmonic devices could break the diffraction limit and make photonic devices smaller than a wavelength. High-quality-factor micro-resonators can significantly enhance the optical nonlinearity and generate optical frequency combs. In this talk I will present the following results from our group:  

  1. Novel devices and phenomena from silicon-based microring resonators, including optical diodes <1> and frequency combs <2>;

  2. Functional silicon photonic sub-systems and their application in microwave photonics <3, 4>;  

  3. Nanoimprint <5> and laser shock imprinting <6> in metals and their applications in plasmonics and graphene photonics.

  Biography:Minghao Qi received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from MIT in 2005, and subsequently joined the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Purdue University, where he is currently an associate professor. He received a Young Investigator Award from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency in 2010 and was a visiting scientist of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory from 2012 to 2013. His research interest includes silicon photonics, microwave photonics, nanofabrication, photonic crystal and photovoltaics. His group has published over 50 papers in leading journals including Science, Nature, Nature Photonics, and Nature Communications. He is an associated editor of Scientific Reports.
